We never did make it until midnight- but everyone in my house slept through the changing of the year. Our daughter made it up past her bedtime and then an hour later she finally begged to go to bed because she was "so tired".
Our New Year's party to welcome in '09 was a simple dinner out at a local restaurant. We then came home to make s'mores and watched lots of movies in our PJ's around the Christmas tree. Very nice and cozy.
