Married to a Writer

Finally, got it! Took me awhile, but I now get the fact that I am married to a writer. I was curious as to why I itched and felt nauseous reading Todd's blogs about writing...now I know it was an allergic reaction to being around too many writers.

My husband writes almost everyday. He is glued to his laptop. In fact, two laptops are within his reach and his blackberry rests beside him. When the muse is tantalizing, nothing removes my Eric's focus from his task at hand. Not food, not a crying kid, not a wet dripping smelly dog. He is a machine when he is writing... and when stuff is happening- he cannot stop.

The only sonnets and love poems he has written were used to court me back in the days of our dating. Those stay locked in the family vault where all our treasures are!

Lately, his writing is in weird, foreign languages that no one speaks. The names of the languages make me think of really awful musical keys (which were tough scales to practice) - like C#. And supposedly very few people know this stuff anyway. But we can all witness his results if you watch an open wheel race- like this weekend's IRL Long Beach Race in Florida.

Yep- being married to a software developer is really about being married to a writer. Maybe I need to start a support group...

Vacation is a-comin'

You can smell the relaxation, the change of pace, and nap that I am anticipating. It's in the air everywhere around me. Ahh...

Do you think there will be time for a bubble bath? Or a dreamy novel about far away and exotic places? Sigh...

I shall be blogging later- have a great weekend everyone. We are off to celebrate 50 years of marriage for my mother and father in law!

Bye Bye Blue Devils

Well, it has been a great season- we won the ACC Tournament and our boys played terrific. I am bummed about their tough loss last night, but happy for them overall.

I shall miss our seniors- but believe the 'bones' or core of our team for next year looks stellar!

Where Have All the Words Gone?

I noticed today I haven't blogged/written anything since Saturday. Gosh- what happened? Well, it seems I just didn't have any words to describe the fullness of life these last few days.

Silence is sometimes a great gift that sneaks up and demands attention.

Try it. Turn off the noise in the car. Put a sheet over the TV. Hide the iPod...and get with the quiet.

Then, you'll hear all of your inner noise. So write out what you're thinking, draw a picture, dance a song, etc.

After that listen- practicing listening...

you probably will hear Someone be glad you're here.

Come on and get here, Spring Break!

Our family is eager for a change of routine and pace. That will be our gift in about a week. We'll be doing one of those 'vacation-at-home' spring break weeks. Visiting the children's musuem, zoo, swimming in a local indoor pool, and anything else fun we can find!

Making our plans and arrangements reminded me of a vacation poem I wrote years ago. It is entitled- On Holiday.

Exceptional vacations always claim to be what they are not,
like cramped cars, busy airports and lumpy luggage to be fought


Or rain on the beach, sun on the slopes, flooding in the campground;
Don’t drop his retainer, sweater or the keys in lost-n-found


Plus never ever ask for directions or make a pit stop
because we don’t pause to rest or catch our breath, only chop chop!

Our Fitness Challenge

Throughout this season of Lent we have challenged our congregation to get fit, get healthy and experience the wholeness of life through Jesus Christ....and our fitness challenge. Folks have been counting their steps, flossing, reading their Bibles, attending Wednesday night guest speaker events, drinking more water, and not talking on cell phones while driving! (Those are just some of the things we are doing or not doing for points!)

Thus, far the competition has been fierce! Teams are stepping forward with awesome scores. Our individual competition is tough too. Who knows who the winner(s) will be?

Although some folks have found keeping track of their scores to be the most difficult aspect of the challenge... and those folks have been dropping out of the competition each day and each week.

(I just participated in the CLA's fire drill... that means more steps for me!)

Have fun everyone getting fit and staying in love with God...and don't forget the 10 point event- walking/praying our canvas labyrinth on Good Friday. And no, you don't get more than ten points for walking it more than once...

Joy arrives in the small things

Woo hoo! Spring has sprung... at least until later this week when it will get cold and then warm again. The start of spring reminds me of how I drive a stick shift- lots of jerky movements back and forth! (My husband doesn't let me drive a stick shift anymore...because I am bad on the clutch.)

And in other great news my Blue Devils won their ACC tournament and now we are on for the BIG DANCE! Yeah- I was reminded by one of my office hall mates to get my brackets filled out. So, in-between Bible study, hospital visits, and Confirmation class preparations my bracket will get filled in today.
